AMD shows off impressive Ryzen 5000 mobile processors and 3rd Gen Epyc server chips


Advanced Micro Devices showcased its impressive Ryzen 5000 mobile processors today and showcased the performance of its 3rd Gen Epyc server chips.

These chips aim to keep AMD ahead of its competitor Intel in the mobile and server markets. AMD CEO Lisa Su showed off the new chips in her keynote speech at CES 2021, an online technology showcase.

AMD Launches Ryzen 5000 Series Mobile Processors for Gaming Laptops and Thin & Light Laptops. These x86 octa-core chips are built using a 7nm manufacturing process (with 7 billionths of a meter spacing between circuits). They are also based on the Zen3 design for processor cores which can process instructions 19% faster per clock than Zen2 cores.

The H series is aimed at the ultimate performance notebook for gamers and content creators, while the U series is aimed at thin and light notebooks with long battery life. The chips have four to eight cores, and their power consumption ranges from 15 to 45 watts.

AMD said the 5000 series will be available on PC in February and we’ll see more than 150 systems use it. This compares to 100 systems for the Ryzen 4000 Series and 70 for the Ryzen 3000.

These chips “carry many of the things that made the desktop launch so damn powerful,” Robert Halleck, director of technical marketing, said in a news conference.

One of the top chips is the AMD Ryzen 5980HS mobile processor, which has eight cores and 16 threads. It is powered by 3.0 GHz and can accelerate to 4.8 GHz and has a power consumption of 35 watts. It is not as fast on a single thread as the fastest Intel chips, but it does show itself in multiprocessing.

“We’ve never had better results,” Halleck said. “In 2021, AMD will account for the lion’s share of high-end gaming laptops.”

Analyst firm Mercury Research noted that AMD increased market share for client computing chips for 12 consecutive quarters, ending in the third quarter of 2020. AMD’s desktop market share was 20% this quarter, up two percentage points from a year earlier and seven percent. glasses two years ago. In the third quarter, AMD’s mobile market share was 20.2%, up 6 percentage points from a year earlier.

Meanwhile, AMD Ryzen 5900HX is the fastest chip, running 14% faster than Intel Core i9-10980HK processor in a single thread. According to AMD, processor performance is about 37% higher, and in game physics – by 21%. Su showed Horizon: Zero Dawn running on PC at over 100 frames per second.

The AMD Ryzen 5800U processor can run 22% faster in productivity applications like Excel, or 7% faster when browsing the web with Microsoft Edge. The battery life is about 17.5 hours with normal use.

“We’ve extended battery life, we’re still the only company to offer eight cores in ultra-thin laptops,” Halleck said. “This is a very competitive product.”

AMD also announced its third generation Epyc processor for servers, which it says will have the highest performance of an x86 server processor in both core count and bandwidth measurements. It is designed to support cloud services.

AMD claims the 32-core chip will have 68% better performance than the 28-core Intel Xeon 6258R.

“The 3rd generation Epyc will set the bar for data center computing,” Su said.

Dylan Lawson, director of product marketing for AMD’s server division, said in a press conference that AMD is shipping its latest 3rd generation Epyc processor, codenamed Milan, this quarter.

Finally, Su said that existing AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro processors will now be directly available to consumers through participating global retailers and system integrators. Ryzen Threadripper Pro processors have up to 64 cores, 8 memory channels, RDIMM and LRDIMM support, 128 PCIe Gen 4 lanes, and AMD Pro security.
